A hawk stole my pigeon! Prepare your flocks for the loss of vegetative cover.

I miss my pigeon. I heard the ruckus, but there was nothing I could do. By the time I got to the window, all I saw was one hawk flying away. Little pigeon was gone, and all the pullets had squeezed themselves under some vines for cover. As the leaves fall, the hawks have a better view of my little ones.

I could rewrite the book, but Harvey Ussery has written a wonderful article on how to prepare your flocks for winter. He is writing from themodernhomestead.us, zone 6, so a bit colder than we're used to in zone 8 weather of central Texas. But his advice is timely and ageless, covering housing and ventilation to winter watering, laying and feed needs.

Check out his article, Preparing your Flock for Winter, in the October/November 2011 issue of Backyard Poultry Magazine. He covers everything you need to consider for a snappy cold change in the weather. And if you're like me, and let your chickens free range, remember to keep an extra eye to the sky, and replace or add cover for your chickens to evade air predators as the leaves and vegetation disappears over winter.
